CMSACS elections, upcoming meeting, and I. M. Kolthoff Enrichment Awards

The following individuals have been nominated for the open positions of the section's Executive Committee:

Chair-elect - Matthew Grandbois

Secretary - Jia Wei

Treasurer - Mark Turnbull

Member-at-large - Weichu Xu and Muyun Xu

We thank the members of the Nominating Committee, Meghna Dilip, Dennis Awasabisah, and Mathangi Krishnamurthy for their work. In the near future we will be communicating details of how the election will be conducted this year.

We also want to let everyone know that we will have another Zoom meeting on November 12, 2020 with a networking theme and presentation by Matthew Grandbois. Details will be forthcoming.

Finally, we would like to make those at academic institutions aware that the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry is seeking undergraduate applicants for the I.M. Kolthoff Enrichment Award. The award, in the amount of up to $750, is normally used to cover travel, however, the award can be used to cover registration fees in case the conference is held virtually. The application deadline is January 11, 2021; please see below for details.

Sincerely,

Ioannis Papayannopoulos, Chair

Central Massachusetts Section of the American Chemical Society

I. M. Kolthoff Enrichment Awards for Undergraduate Students

The American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry (ACS-DAC) encourages undergraduate students to apply for this travel award to present their research at either Pittcon or the spring ACS meeting.

Amount of Award: up to $750

Deadline: 2nd Monday in January 2021

The I.M. Kolthoff Award is given annually to deserving undergraduates who have done undergraduate research in the field of analytical chemistry, broadly defined, in celebration of the life and accomplishments of the late Professor Izaak Maurits Kolthoff, viewed by many as the father of modern analytical chemistry.

The deadline for submission of completed applications for the I.M. Kolthoff Award for consideration is the second Monday in January of each year. Please direct all questions to Michelle Kovarik.

The Kolthoff awards provide travel funding up to $750 for undergraduate students to present a poster on their undergraduate research annually at either PITTCON or the Spring ACS National Meeting & Exposition. Four awards will likely be made between the two meetings. At either meeting, students should plan to present their posters at the ACS Analytical Division Poster Session. Preference will be given to undergraduate chemistry majors with strong academic records who have made significant research contributions in the analytical sciences for whom this would be their first national meeting presentation and who have access to limited other support mechanisms.

Directions:

A completed application consists of the completed application form (Kolthoff Application) including a copy of the abstract submitted for presentation at either PITTCON or the Spring ACS National Meeting, and a nomination letter, written by the student’s undergraduate research advisor. The nomination letter should be submitted directly by the student’s advisor via E-mail to Professor Michelle Kovarik, Chair of the DAC Education Committee. The subject line of the email should state “Letter of Recommendation on Behalf of [Student’s Name] for Kolthoff Award.” All applications and nomination letters must be submitted in electronic form.
